Colonial Pancake & Waffle House
Celebrating half a century in business, The Colonial Pancake and Waffle House was showcased in Southern Living's book "Off the Eaten Path".
Restaurant owners Rick and Denise Gale received a call from the author, Morgan Murphy, who wanted to visit the Spa City. They were asked if he could feature the restaurant in their new book.
Unknown to the Gales at the time two anonymous representatives from Southern Living had stopped in previously to dine but did not identify themselves to the owners.
Murphy showed up with his crew and filmed the restaurant inside and out, photographed the food, and interviewed the Gales.
The local restaurant is one of a dozen eateries that has a place in the Southern Living cookbook and it is the only breakfast shop to be featured.
Christine T. Boatwright of Oxmoor House Publishing, said the local restaurant is "a gem worth sharing with their readers". She said they had narrowed down some of the South's best roadside eateries and The Colonial Pancake and Waffle House was included.
The Gales have continued the tradition started by Rick Gale's parents, Milt and Betty Jo Gale. For 43 years, Betty owned the restaurant and served customers as if they were members of her own family.
We estimate that since the doors opened in 1962, over 2 million eggs and over 4 million pancakes have been served at The Colonial Pancake & Waffle House.
Two of the Gales' favorite recipes, stuffed French toast and their Western omelet was presented in the book. The Western omelet is one the best sellers.
Since Rick and Denise have taken over the restaurant, they have added a lunch menu and are including more healthy choices.
